Community grants
The aim of the Rivers Run Through Us community grant scheme is to provide a very simple way for community groups to access small amounts of funding to kickstart or advance their group/activities. It may also be used to support the acquisition of much needed advice, equipment, and other resources. We piloted this (financed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Water Environment Improvement Fund) and hope to continue to offer this grant if the project successfully continues into its delivery phase from 2027.
Whilst the Axe catchment is blessed with 12 wonderful sub-catchments, seven of these feed into the River Axe Special Area of Conservation which is not in good ecological condition. For this reason, in 2025 we welcomed projects that were in or near to the Kit Brook and Forton Brook that would benefit from financial support to help improve their condition.
Community action can make a huge difference to the local environment, and rivers give back by providing a space for enjoyment and wellbeing. For this reason, we also included applications from community groups that wished to celebrate the river and all it has to offer.
After successfully awarding funds to eight brilliant local projects, we look forward to seeing these projects through and recognising the incredible work they are doing for the River Axe and surrounding landscapes and people.
