Friends of the River Axe

Friends of the River Axe is a community group working to protect and enhance the River Axe and its tributaries. We tackle pollution, restore wetlands, and support biodiversity – helping species like otters and kingfishers thrive.

Through partnerships, education and hands-on volunteering, we improve river health and promote nature-based solutions. We’re people of the place, speaking up for the River.

The Friends of the River Axe is a river-action, community group dedicated to protecting and enhancing the River Axe, her tributaries and the surrounding environment in the East Devon, West Dorset and South Somerset borderlands.

The group works to reduce pollution, restore wetlands, and promote biodiversity by supporting species such as otters, water voles and kingfishers. We collaborate with farmers, councils, and the Environment Agency to manage runoff and improve river health. Education and community engagement are central – volunteers help with river monitoring, litter picks, and habitat restoration as well as installing natural flood management interventions and nature-based solutions.

Through volunteer events, educational projects, and partnerships with local organisations, Friends of the River Axe works to restore natural ecosystems, support biodiversity, and ensure the river returns to being a healthy, thriving happy place for future generations.

The Friends of the River Axe slogan sums up who we are… people of the place; voice of the River.
